I realise this is subject to change on a regular basis but I thought I’d list my top 5 favs in Edinburgh by category.  Today, restaurants, obviously!  These restaurants have been picked based on quality and value for money.  I have plenty of other “favourite” restaurants that are a little out of my budget, so fail to make the grade.

1. A Room in Leith

Being my place of work, I know this pick is somewhat biased, however, I love that I can happily recommend this place solely on the quality of food and level of service (!).  Perfect for seafood – fresh fish changing daily, mussels (mariniere/blue cream), oysters, Fish and Chips… but also plenty of meat/veggie options. Perfect setting overlooking the water.

2. First Coast

A similar bistro style restaurant serving good quality, great value plates of delicious fresh food.  Plenty of twists on typical Scottish produce, bringing homely comfort food together with further afield flavours such as peanut laksa and middle eastern platters.

3. Pho Vietnam

It’s been a while, but this is an old time favourite. This teeny, weeny restaurant only seats around 20 people but this ensures you get the full attention of owner, sole waitress and food prepper, Jodie.  The food brings the best of Vietnamese flavours together.  Lots of coriander, ginger and lemongrass, with light fluffy rice, piping hot, comforting noodle soups, and melt in the mouth braised, fish, pork and beef dishes.

4. Chez Jules

Whisk yourself away for a romantic evening Parisian style.  Rustic decor, candlelit tables and wine served in tumblers makes it all the more authentic, and the food helps too.  You’re best off sharing a bit of everything; moules frites, bread, steak, calamari, stuffed peppers………  Take your time and while the evening away over a bottle or two of great, French wine.

5. Chop Chop

Another long time favourite.  Made famous by Gordon Ramsey’s search for the best Chinese restaurant in Scotland, this place has still maintained good prices, and authentic Northern Chinese food.  Canteen style design sets the scene for a meal that will transport you by flavours and textures, to far reaches of China.  Fame on the Gordon Ramsey map has so far not detracted from the great food and excellent service.  Arrive hungry and order the sharing banquets; dumplings, fried aubergines, sticky rice, crispy Northern chicken, pickled potato salad, fish balls with chili .. you won’t find your usual Chinese takeaway menu here.
