I’ve lost count of the Scandinavian dramas that have been seeing me through the winter.  Something about the dark, sinister and bleak landscapes that provide the perfect backdrop to a good old fashioned crime drama.  The Swedes/Danes/Norwegians do this genre better than anyone else and I LOVE IT.

The Killing

Wallander

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

The Girl who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest

The Girl who played with Fire

Borgen

The Bridge

Headhunters

One of the most appealing characteristics of these programmes is the tendency to have a strong female lead.  Quirky, passionate, independent women running the show.  Other common traits of the Scandi drama is a funny guy sidekick, cutthroat journalists, political spinning, fragile relationships, socially awkward lead characters and of course the “whodunnit” (and you bet your life it won’t be one of the first 20 people you accuse!).

There’s nothing like spending a day in your pyjamas with a pot of tea and a duvet watching an entire series – long may they continue!
